Today we visited Grace House, a community centre located in a town close to Siem Reap, in the north of Cambodia.

Siem Reap is home to the famous World Heritage site of Angkor Wat, one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia which attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Unfortunately, the surrounding communities don’t all benefit from the mass tourism , so Grace House exists to fill this gap, supporting more than 200 families living below the poverty line in these rural villages.

We were really impressed with just how much support they provide to these children and their families.

Grace House’s main projects are:

Education

There are classes right from pre-school to grade 12 and even after that, Grace House offers scholarships for students to go to universtiy or take vocational training – the founder is a professional mechanic and has a workshop in the grounds and a social entreprise in the local area where apprentices can gain invaluable hands on experience and an income once they’ve graduated.

Family Support and Health Care

A free lunch is offred  to the poorest children at Grace House, with the cooks often buying vegetables grown on-site which is one of several income generation projects the Centre has created.

The kids are taught the importance of good hygiene, including brushing their teeth and washing with clean water – there are  cool little water filtration systems outside each class room.

There is even a house on-site for families who may have found themselves homeless. They can stay for a few months whilst they find their feet again.

Services for disabled children

Impressively, Grace House also provides special services for physically and mentally disabled children. A small care home within Grace House provides safe and caring environment for children with disabilities who may have been abandoned.

We happened to turn up today, the 7th anniversary of opening their doors, so there was much to celebrate and we had the great pleasure of leaving them with almost £95 including Gift Aid (We love gift aid!).  As just $3 can buy 10 exercise books, we are sure this donation will  go some way to helping them continue their great work.
